What Type of Sewage Permit Do I Need?

Sewage Alteration vs. Replacement

Not sure if you need to apply for an alteration or a replacement permit for an existing sewage treatment system?  Answer these questions to help you determine which permit is right for you.

  1. Are you experiencing a failure within your leaching (i.e. surfacing of effluent) and need to replace it?

  2. Are you abandoning your existing system/leaching to relocate it somewhere else on the property.

If the answer is "yes" to questions 1 or 2, you need to apply for a Replacement Permit.  If the answer is no to both questions, continue...

  1. Are you maintaining all existing components of your sewage treatment system, but adding additional treatment (i.e. filter) to work in conjunction with the existing system?

  2. Are you maintaining all existing components of your sewage treatment system, but adding additional tank capacity to reach compliance with tank sizing requirements?

  3. Are you maintaining existing leaching or discharge but replacing a component with similar parts?

If you answered "yes" to questions 3, 4, or 5, you need to apply for an alteration permit.  If you answered "no" to all questions or have further questions, please call 740-652-2800 to speak to a sanitarian for more information.
